Indigo Hotel, Dundee

The former Baxter Brothers jute mill on Constable Street, Dundee (once the empire of the Baxter brothers who, between 1840-90, rose to be the world's first linen manufacturers. Lower Dens was built from Baxter's own foundry, consisting of four fireproof flax mills). The Victorian building was acquired by a leading hotel management company and undertook extensive renovation and restoration work to turn it into a boutique hotel and serviced apartment complex. Hotel Indigo, Dundee, boasts 102 guest rooms, while the Staybridge Suites will have 85 apartments.

Main contractor for the project, Sharkey, approached Alexander Sturrock to develop and manufacture replacement timber windows for the dilapidated original crittall windows in the building. The Sturrocks technical team worked closely with the main contractor, architects and planners to develop a unique timber window system for the project. Alexander Sturrock manufactured over 300 individually sized timber windows for this project. They consisted of historically styled arched-head windows and a unique mid-sash hopper system –a first for the industry, and a solution that met both energy performance requirements and retention of historical fenestration detailing. This was a project that exemplified Sturrocks capability and unique position in the marketplace.
